Geolocation Enrichment Tools

LoCloud provides both a Web Service API and a Microservice to facilitate geocoding of existing cultural heritage data that do not have location information that can be resolved to coordinates. Using these tools, existing content can be tagged with both coordinates, geographical names as well as persistent URIs of known geographical concepts such as Geonames.

If you would like to invoke the geocoding API from your own applications, please refer to the technical documentation. If you would like to install the Geocoding Microservice on your own server, please refer to the installation documentation - and if you would like to know how to use the Geocoding Microservice, please refer to the end-user documentation.

Basic exercises and demonstration dataset

These exercises should be done using the demo instance of the LoCloud geocoding application. The test-accounts provided only exists in this instance.

Download this dataset and note where you save it on your computer

Follow the steps below:

  1. Log in with account
    • The predefined users Editor1, Editor2, Editor3 ... Editor15 exists (captial "E", no space between name and number).
    • They all have password "editor"
  2. Upload a new data source
    • Choose "Add new data source" in the left margin
    • Choose the file you downloaded (see top of this section)
    • The character encoding of the file is ISO-8859-1
    • The separator character between fields in the file is ";" (semicolon)
    • Give the data source a name that you will be able to remember
    • The existing coordinates are lat/long
    • The field names are self-explanatory in terms of the mapping
  3. Create a user
    • Choose "Manage users" in the right margin
    • You will also see all other users, please note the name of the user you create
    • You will need it in the next step
  4. Share data source with user
    • Choose "Manage data sources" in the left margin
    • Select the data source
    • Set access level to "Contributor"
    • Type the first letter of the username of the user you create above
    • Choose "Add to access control list"
  5. Select the data source you uploaded
    • Filter data source by geography or category
    • See how the item list at the bottom of the left margin changes
  6. Select and edit an item
    • View information image/url
    • Edit attributes
    • Add coordinates/objects using map
    • Note the metadata for the location in the form (accuracy, resolution etc)
    • Add coordinates using database search and map
    • Save items
    • Alternatively you can repeat the above steps as the "contributor" user you created above...
  7. Export and use data in applications
    • Export as KML and note where you save the downloaded file
    • Open the KML file in Google Earth.
